Booker T. Washington National Monument

In southwestern Virginia, 22 mi southeast of Roanoke

 

Booker T. Washington, educator, orator, and presidential advisor, was born into slavery, reared, and emancipated at this former plantation site. The park is one of the few places where visitors can see how slavery and the plantation system worked on a smaller scale. It provides a focal point for discussions about one of the most powerful African-Americans in history and the evolving context of race in American society. It was authorized on April 2, 1956.

Attending interpretive tours, viewing exhibits and audiovisual programs, walking historic and nature trails. Facilities: Visitor center, wayside exhibits. Bookstore, picnic area. Programs & Events: Ranger-guided tours (daily). Living-history program and demonstrations (periodically). Christmas program and open house (1st weekend, Dec). Tips & Hints: Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Dec. and Jan.

HOW TO GET THERE

On Rte. 122, 16 mi northeast of Rocky Mount, 22 mi southeast of Roanoke via Rte. 116 south and Rte. 122 north, and 21 mi south of Bedford via Rte. 122 south. Closest airport: Roanoke.
