This scenic river preserves relatively unspoiled land in southern West Virginia, contains natural and historic features of the Appalachian plateau, and offers excellent warm-water fishing, hiking, boating, and scenery in its lower 11 mi. The river was authorized on October 26,1988.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Bicycling, canoeing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, white-water boating. Facilities: Bluestone Trail, 8 mi. Programs & Events: Guided hikes, interpretive programs (June-Nov). Tips & Hints: Intermediate skill required for Class I and II white water. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Jan. and Feb.

Camping: None in park. In Bluestone State Park: Meador Campground (off Rte. 20, at mouth of Bluestone River, tel. 304/466-2895; 32 sites; $7-$ 19; flush toilets, showers, hook-ups). FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

Free. No hunting or trapping on upper river. Open 24 hours.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

The scenic river is south of Hinton and northeast of Princeton. Access is through the Bluestone and Pipestem Resort state parks on Rte. 20. A tram that can transport boats provides access to the river from Pipestem Resort State Park. Closest airport: Charleston (95 mi).
