LOCATION - Big Run State Park is 11 miles northwest of Luke on Savage River Road near the Savage River Dam. Take Exit 24 off U.S. 48 to New Germany Road.

 

To reach New Germany State Park from Grantsville, take Exit 24 off U.S. 48 and follow Chestnut Ridge Road to Lower New Germany Road. Go south 5 miles.

 

To reach Casselman River Bridge State Park, take Exit 24 off U.S. 40 and go west for 2 miles. The bridge is l/i mile east of Grantsville on U.S. 40.

 

FEATURES - Casselman Bridge, built in 1813, was the longest single-span stone arch bridge in the U.S. when built along U.S. 40, called the National Road. This road was the first major highway to pass through famed Cumberland Narrows in the Allegheny Mountains, thus opening the west for settlement.

 

ACTIVITIES - In Big Run State Park, go boating and flatwater canoeing from the boat launch. Camp in one of 30 campsites and go freshwater fishing and hiking. During the winter, go ice fishing.

 

New Germany State Park is in the Savage River State Forest. Go boating from the boat launch and flatwater canoeing. Overnight in one of the cabins or in one of 37 campsites with a dumping station.

 

Go freshwater fishing for bass and swimming and boating from the ramp with rentals available in New Germany Lake. Tour the nature center, take a nature walk, attend campfire programs, and go hiking. During the winter, go cross-country skiing and ice fishing.

 

At Casselman River, visit the historic bridge, enjoy freshwater fishing, and bring along a picnic.

 

Tour Penn Alps/Spruce Forest Artisan Village located Vi mile east of Grantsville on alternate U.S. 40. Observe demonstrations of colonial American arts and crafts and stroll through the Spruce Forest Artisan Village with five restored log houses. For information, call 301-895-5985.

 

Overnight in the Casselman Hotel on Main Street in Grantsville. This mid-nineteenth-century hostelry was constructed to provide accommodations for travelers along the National Road. For information, call 301-895-5055.
