BELLEVUE STATE PARK

LOCATION - The park is 4 miles northeast of Wilmington off 1-95 on Carr Road. Take Exit 9, Marsh Road.

FEATURES - Bellevue is the former estate of William du Pont.

ACTIVITIES - Visitors can go bicycling and fishing for bass, catfish, and sunfish. Stroll along the Delaware River or on the estate grounds. Runners have access to a lVe-mile fitness track circling a pond where anglers come to fish. Food service is available.

 

Tennis players have 2 indoor and 8 outdoor clay courts. Golfers play a nine-hole course and equestrians ride equestrian trails. Go for a hayride, attend a concert in the bandshell. During the winter, enjoy cross-country skiing. In Wilmington, tour the Delaware Art Museum at 2301 Kentmere Parkway. For information, call 302-571-9590. The Delaware Museum of Natural History is on Delaware 52 between Greenville and Centreville and features a walk across Australia's Great Barrier Reef and an undersea world. Flower lovers can visit Nemours Mansion and formal French gardens on Alfred I. du Pont's estate, open from May-November. It's on Rockland Road between Delaware 141 and U.S. 202. Arrange a mansion tour by calling 302-651-6912.

 

Take a tour of Winterthur Museum and Gardens located on Delaware 52, 6 miles northwest of Wilmington. The museum sponsors annual Point-to-Point races in May, featuring steeplechases, pony races, and a parade of horse-drawn antique coaches and carriages. Rockwood Museum is on 610 Shipley Road in Wilmington. Guided tours of the mansion are given Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00-3:00 except on holidays. Special events here include a mid-July Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival and a Victorian Christmas. For information, call 302-571-7776.

 

Take a ride aboard an authentic turn-of-the-century steam train through historic Red Clay Valley. It departs from Greenbank Station on Delaware 41. For information, call 302-998-1930.

Longwood Gardens on U.S. 1 north of Kennett Square has year-round displays in 20 indoor conservatories and on 1,050 acres of outdoor gardens and woodlands.
