ALLEGANY STATE PARK

 

LOCATION - The park is south of Salamanca on State Park Road 1. Quaker Run is 11 miles west of Salamanca, Exit 18 off New York 17. Red House is 7 miles west of Salamanca, Exit 19 off New York 17.

 

ACTIVITIES - Allegany is New York's largest state park. Quaker Run Campground has 189 sites, 95 with electrical hookups, and a dump station. Red House campground has 134 sites, 67 with electrical hookups, and two dump stations. Attend year-round interpretive programs.

 

You can also stay in one of over 300 cabins, 100 winterized and available year-round. Three restaurants operate seasonally.

 

The park has many streams and two large lakes: Red House and Quaker. Trout season runs from April 1-September 30, except on Quaker Lake where it's year-round. Motorized boats are not permitted anywhere except for those with electric motors on Quaker Lake. Boat rentals are available.

 

Swimming is permitted from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Red House Lake and from mid-June through Labor Day at Quaker Lake.

 

Hikers have access to 18 trails covering 70 miles. These range in length from .5-mile-long Bear Springs Trail to the 18-mile-long segment of the North Country Trail which passes through the park. Equestrians can explore 55 miles of trails and rent horses in the Summit area. Bring along insect repellent and watch for poison ivy along the trails.

 

Bicyclists can circle Red House Lake on a 5.5-mile paved trail that crosses a rustic covered bridge. Bicycles and boats are available for rent. Mountain bicyclists get a good workout by cycling in the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area.

Motorists can pick up a free copy of Allegany State Park Auto Tour Guide Book for a self-guided 25-mile tour.

 

During the winter, go cross-country skiing on 30 miles of trails, including those in the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area, or snowmobiling along 55 miles of trails.

 

In nearby Salamanca, tour the Salamanca Rail Museum at 170 Main to see a restored 1912 passenger depot. For information, call 716-945-3133. Seneca Iroquois National Museum on the Allegany Indian Reservation is off U.S. 17, Exit 20. For information, call 716-945-3133.

 

Visit Chautauqua Institute, located northwest of the park. Purchase a ticket to tour the grounds or attend musical concerts and plays in the amphitheater from late June-August. For event information, call 716-357-6200. To play golf, call 716-357-6211 for a tee-off time.

 

Incoming pilots can land at Olean Municipal Airport, located 10 miles north of Olean. Rental cars are available.
