ALLAIRE STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is near Allaire, 3 miles west of Garden State Parkway, southbound Exit 98 or via 195, Exit 31B, Monmouth County. It's also 12 miles southeast of Freehold via U.S. 9 and New Jersey 524.
FEATURES - Iron was smelted over a century ago at the historic Howell Works, a bog ore furnace and forge.
ACTIVITIES - The park is open year-round. Tour historic Allaire Village, built in 1822 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic buildings are open from May-October. Costumed interpreters demonstrate corn husking, militia muster, and nineteenth-century lawn games. For information, call 908-938-2253.
Take a ride on the narrow gauge Pine Creek Railroad from early April through mid-October. For a schedule, call 908-938-5524.
On weekends, enjoy special events like craft and antique shows, square dancing, and decoy carving.
Hike, horseback ride, or bicycle the multi-use trails. Paddle canoe trails on the Manasquan River, tour the visitor center, enjoy a picnic, and go fishing for stocked trout. Camp in the 55-site campground and attend campfire programs.
Play eighteen holes of golf on Spring Meadow Golf Course and purchase a snack. In the winter, go sledding and cross-country skiing.
